There is no better feeling than sand in your toes and the ocean breeze on your face! I get a little stir crazy if I don’t feel the ocean lapping at me feet every few weeks. So, you can imagine my excitement every time a couple comes to me ready to hit a California beach on their elopement day! I have been known to literally jump up and down after every beach elopement I book!

This particular beach elopement happened at my favorite nook in Northern California, Dillon Beach! It is small, easy to access, and dog friendly. That means you can include your favorite for legged friend!

How can you make your elopement amazing? Go with the flow!

As with all elopement locations, the beaches of California have some elements to prepare for, like the wind! It’s going to be breezy no matter what…but sometimes that wind kicks up unexpectedly. So, if you can’t handle hair everywhere, we should probably find you a more predicable location LOL I personally think the wind creates beautiful motion, romantic wispy hair, and seriously epic photo opportunities. I say lean into the wind, literally and metaphorically! That is how you make your elopement the most magical and amazing day ever, lean into the wind! Enjoy every second and let me take care of the planning part.

So how do you pick the perfect beach (or other location) for you and your boo?

It all starts with wat you are in the mood for! Cliffs, sandy dunes, cotton candy skies, big break? The California coastline is so diverse, we have endless options. I also like to consider accessibility. Are you in for a mile hike up and down a cliffside? Or do you prefer a few paces before your feet are in the sand!

You also need to be realistic with yourself, what you really want, and what you can handle in a wedding dress! It is okay to admit you don’t want to walk down steep steps. It isn’t okay to pretend you are down to hike, when you are kinda dreading it LOL that will not make for a relaxing elopement. I have so many suggestions for California coastal locations, I promise we can find the perfect California beach for your unique elopement!

What else should we think about when planning a beach elopement?

Weather can be unpredictably beautiful! So, you must be ready to go with the flow! It may sprinkle, it may be foggy or cloudy, it may be hot! All of these conditions make for epic and gorgeous photos! Don’t obsess over the weather, your day will be rad no matter what.

Sometimes you need a plan B! Because of the unpredictable nature of the wild California coastline, we will have a plan B. Most beaches in California are accessible by one road in and out. Thanks to rains, winds and the constant battery from the salty air, sometimes these roads are closed or impassable. It is just part of life in a coastal state! This will not ruin the day; we will have a back-up beach.

Don’t plan your wedding on a weekend or holiday. These two times are the worst times to plan an elopement, especially at the beach. You’ll experience nothing but crowds, traffic, and increased pricing for lodging.

Bring sunscreen. Even if you aren’t planning an elopement during the middle of the summer, always be sure to bring sunscreen. There is nothing worse than being sunburnt during your honeymoon! Overcast days are no exception!

Eloping on a beach in California is a beautiful and memorable way to start a marriage, it provides freedom from onerous traditions and ceremonies, a breathtaking backdrop, and an incredibly romantic experience for couples.
